Target Information
Erp proteins from Borrelia burgdorferi are postulated to be lipoproteins based on predicted amino acid sequences. The spirochete migrates from the tick midgut during feeding to the salivary glands and is transmitted to the mammal host. This transition may be facilitated by changes in expression of some B. burgdorferi genes.
It is believed that expression of various proteins associated with the spirochete may be regulated by:
- Tick life cycle changes
- Conditions during tick feeding (temperature, pH, nutrients)
- Coordination with the course of mammalian infection
Studies show that infected humans and animals produce antibodies against Erp proteins within 2–4 weeks of infection, indicating Erp synthesis during early vertebrate infection. Surface-exposed Erp proteins may facilitate interactions with host tissues during infection establishment.
