Target Information
Laminins are extracellular matrix glycoproteins that form a major part of basement membranes. They play key roles in cell adhesion, differentiation, migration, signaling, neurite outgrowth, and metastasis. Laminin effects are mediated through cell surface receptors, including integrins and non-integrin laminin-binding proteins.
The gene encodes a high-affinity, non-integrin laminin receptor 1, also known as:
- 67 kD laminin receptor
- 37 kD laminin receptor precursor (37LRP)
- p40 ribosome-associated protein
The amino acid sequence of laminin receptor 1 is highly conserved, indicating essential biological function. Elevated expression has been observed in colon carcinoma and lung cancer cells, correlating with invasive and metastatic potential. Multiple pseudogene copies exist, likely from retropositional events. Two alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
