Target Information

Megsin, also designated SerpinB7 and TP55, is a 380 amino acid cytoplasmic protein predominantly expressed in mesangial cells, which are important for maintaining glomerular structure and function. As a member of the serpin family, megsin acts as a serine protease inhibitor that potentially inactivates MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin—enzymes responsible for extracellular matrix degradation. Overexpression of megsin leads to mesangial cell proliferation and mesangial matrix expansion accompanied by immune complex deposition. This suggests megsin plays a key role in renal structure regulation and may be implicated in various nephropathies.
