Background
Produced by activated monocytes and neutrophils, CXCL2 is expressed at sites of inflammation. It functions as a hematoregulatory chemokine that suppresses hematopoietic progenitor cell proliferation in vitro. The cleaved form, GRO-beta(5-73), exhibits enhanced hematopoietic activity and is available pharmaceutically as Garnocestim, used prior to hematopoietic transplantation to mobilize peripheral blood stem cells and reduce chemotherapy-induced cytopenias.
The N-terminal processed form GRO-beta(5-73) is generated by proteolytic cleavage after secretion from bone marrow stromal cells.
CXCL2 belongs to the intercrine alpha (chemokine CxC) family.
