Background
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the basic helix-loop-helix leucine zipper (bHLHZ) family of transcription factors. It can form homodimers and heterodimers with other family members such as Mad, Mxi1, and Myc. Myc is an oncoprotein involved in cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. These dimers compete for a common DNA target site (E box), providing a complex system of transcriptional regulation. Mutations in this gene have been associated with hereditary pheochromocytoma. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 7, and alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [RefSeq, Aug 2012]
