Background
This gene belongs to a family of Sp1-related genes that encode transcription factors regulating gene expression by binding to GC- and GT-box elements. The Sp3 protein contains a zinc finger DNA-binding domain and multiple transactivation domains, functioning as a bifunctional transcription factor that can both activate and repress transcription. Several transcript variants and isoforms have been identified, including those initiated from non-AUG start codons or alternative downstream sites. A related pseudogene exists on chromosome 13.
