Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in mitochondrial protein synthesis.
Mitochondrial ribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio compared to prokaryotic ribosomes.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein showing high sequence similarity to the ribosomal protein S11P family.
A pseudogene is located on chromosome 20, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
