Target Information
IL-6 encodes a cytokine involved in inflammation and B cell maturation. It acts as an endogenous pyrogen, inducing fever during autoimmune diseases or infections. Expressed mainly at inflammation sites, IL-6 triggers transcriptional inflammatory responses via the interleukin 6 receptor alpha. It is associated with diseases such as diabetes mellitus susceptibility, systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, Kaposi sarcoma, and rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated IL-6 levels are also observed in viral infections including COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2).
