Actins are highly conserved proteins involved in cell motility and cytoskeletal maintenance.
There are three main actin isoform groups in vertebrates: alpha, beta, and gamma.
- Alpha actins: Found in muscle tissues; major component of the contractile apparatus.
- Beta and gamma actins: Present in most cell types; mediate internal cell motility and cytoskeleton structure.
Actin gamma 1, encoded by this gene, is a cytoplasmic actin found in all cell types.
Mutations are linked to DFNA20/26 (autosomal dominant non-syndromic progressive hearing loss) and Baraitser-Winter syndrome.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
