Target Information
Members of the trefoil family are characterized by having at least one copy of the trefoil motif, a 40-amino acid domain containing three conserved disulfides. They are stable secretory proteins expressed in gastrointestinal mucosa. Their functions are not fully defined but may include protecting the mucosa from insults, stabilizing the mucus layer, and promoting epithelial healing.
This gene, expressed in the gastric mucosa, has also been studied for its expression in human tumors. It is part of a cluster with two other related trefoil family member genes on chromosome 21.
