Target Information
Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD; EC 1.14.99.5) is an iron-containing enzyme that catalyzes a rate-limiting step in the synthesis of unsaturated fatty acids. The principal product of SCD is oleic acid, formed by desaturation of stearic acid. The ratio of stearic to oleic acid influences cell growth and differentiation through effects on membrane fluidity and signal transduction.
Four SCD isoforms (Scd1–Scd4) exist in mouse, while humans have two (SCD1 and SCD5). SCD1 shares ~85% amino acid identity with all four mouse SCD isoforms and with rat Scd1 and Scd2. SCD5, in contrast, shows limited homology with rodent SCDs and appears unique to primates.
