Target Information
Synuclein family of proteins is abundantly expressed in neuronal cytosol and presynaptic terminals. In vertebrates, they are encoded by three different genes. Synucleins are implicated in major diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), and breast cancer.
- In AD: Peptides derived from alpha synuclein form part of amyloid plaques.
- In PD: Alpha synuclein accumulates in Lewy bodies.
- In breast cancer: Increased gamma synuclein expression correlates with disease progression.
Synucleins are also involved in membrane plasticity in developing song control systems of songbirds.
