Target Information
The proteins belonging to the structural maintenance of chromosomes (SMC) family play critical roles in chromosome structural changes. SMC proteins are involved in the proper condensation and segregation of mitotic chromosomes. Four human SMC proteins form two distinct heterodimeric complexes in the cell:
- hCAP-C/hCAP-E (chromosome-associated protein complex)
- hSMC1/hSMC3 (SMC protein complex)
These complexes are essential for maintaining chromosome integrity and proper segregation during cell division.
