Target Information

Protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) are enzymes that remove phosphate groups from phosphorylated tyrosine residues on proteins. Together with tyrosine kinases, they regulate phosphorylation states of signaling molecules such as MAP kinases. PTPs are involved in cell signaling, growth, proliferation, and oncogenic transformation. Dual specificity phosphatases (DSPs) selectively dephosphorylate phosphothreonine and phosphotyrosine residues. The VH1 gene in vaccinia virus is a prototypical DSP expressed in late-stage infection. DSPs have a shallow active site allowing hydrolysis of serine, threonine, or tyrosine residues, unlike PTPs which restrict substrate specificity to phosphotyrosine.
