Target Information
The WNT gene family encodes secreted signaling proteins involved in oncogenesis and developmental processes such as cell fate regulation and embryonic patterning.
WNT4 is the first signaling molecule shown to influence the sex-determination cascade. It encodes a protein with 98% amino acid identity to mouse and rat Wnt4.
WNT4, together with a nuclear receptor that antagonizes the testis-determining factor, plays a key role in female development and prevention of testis formation.
WNT4, WNT2, and WNT7B may be linked to abnormal proliferation in breast tissue.
Mutations in this gene can cause Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome and SERKAL syndrome.
