Target Information

Conventional kinesin is a tetrameric molecule composed of two heavy chains and two light chains, responsible for transporting various cargos along microtubules toward their plus ends. The heavy chains provide motor activity, while the light chains bind to cargos.
The KLC1 gene encodes a kinesin light chain that associates with kinesin heavy chain through its N-terminal domain. Six tetratricopeptide repeat (TPR) motifs are involved in cargo binding, including vesicles, mitochondria, and the Golgi complex.
Kinesin light chains act as adapter molecules rather than motors. Although previously named kinesin 2, this gene is not part of the kinesin-2 heavy chain subfamily. Alternative splicing produces isoforms with distinct C-termini that may bind different cargos.
