Target Information
Alpha actinins belong to the spectrin gene superfamily, a group of cytoskeletal proteins including alpha/beta spectrins and dystrophins. Alpha actinin is an actin-binding protein with multiple roles:
- In nonmuscle cells, it localizes along microfilament bundles and adherens junctions, linking actin to the membrane.
- In muscle cells, it is found at the Z-disc and dense bodies, anchoring myofibrillar actin filaments.
This gene encodes a nonmuscle alpha actinin isoform concentrated in the cytoplasm, potentially involved in metastatic processes. Mutations are associated with focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis.
