Target Information

MAOB (Monoamine Oxidase B), also known as MAO, BRAIN, or AMINE OXIDASE (FLAVIN-CONTAINING) B, is a protein encoded by the MAOB gene in humans.
It belongs to the flavin monoamine oxidase family and is mapped on Xp11.3. MAOB catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines, playing a critical role in the metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in the central nervous system and peripheral tissues.
This enzyme preferentially degrades benzylamine and phenylethylamine, and also degrades dopamine.
MAO-B inhibition enhances dopaminergic activity and reduces hydrogen peroxide production, thereby decreasing reactive oxygen species formation.
