Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA, and their protein components vary significantly across species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The 28S subunit plays a key role in translation initiation. The MRPS33 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein highly conserved among mammals, Drosophila, and C. elegans.
