Olfactory receptors are G-protein coupled receptors that interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These receptors share a 7-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate G protein–based signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and its nomenclature is organism-specific.
