Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) derived from single coding-exon genes.
Olfactory receptors share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and mediate odorant signal recognition and transduction.
The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and nomenclature for these genes and proteins is organism-specific.
