Target Information

Neurofilaments are type IV intermediate filament heteropolymers composed of light, medium, and heavy chains. They form the axoskeleton and maintain neuronal caliber, playing a role in intracellular transport to axons and dendrites.
The NEFM gene encodes the medium neurofilament protein, a common biomarker of neuronal damage.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms.
Diseases associated with NEFM include Pineal Parenchymal Tumor of Intermediate Differentiation and Wallerian Degeneration. Related pathways include Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Neural Stem Cell Differentiation Pathways.
