Target Information
Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide found in C cells of the normal and hyperplastic thyroid. Staining for calcitonin aids in identifying C cell proliferative abnormalities, ranging from C cell hyperplasia to invasive tumors. In medullary carcinoma of the thyroid, calcitonin staining produces a fine granular cytoplasmic pattern. Amyloid deposits within the tumor may also show varying degrees of calcitonin activity.
