Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to subfamily 7 of the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene family. These enzymes play a major role in detoxifying aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation.
This member is homologous to the pea turgor protein and participates in lysine catabolism in the mitochondrial matrix. It is found in both cytosol and mitochondria due to alternative translation initiation sites.
Mutations in this gene are associated with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. Several pseudogenes have also been identified.
