Target Information
The GPI gene encodes a multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase enzyme involved in energy metabolism. This dimeric enzyme catalyzes the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate.
In the cytoplasm, it participates in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis; extracellularly, it acts as a neurotrophic factor for spinal and sensory neurons.
Defects in this gene can cause nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia and severe enzyme deficiency, which may lead to hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
