Target Information

Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) transfers high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to the cytosolic carrier, creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family and exists as sarcomeric and ubiquitous isoenzymes encoded by separate genes. MtCK forms dimers and octamers, unlike cytosolic isoenzymes that form only dimers. Sarcomeric MtCK shares 80% homology with ubiquitous MtCK coding exons. The gene includes motifs common to nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, suggesting roles in coordinated gene activation during mitochondrial biogenesis. Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
