Target Information
Butyrophilin is the major protein associated with fat droplets in milk. This gene belongs to the BTN2 subfamily, encoding proteins of the butyrophilin family. Located on chromosome 6, it is part of a cluster of seven genes within the B7/butyrophilin-like group of the immunoglobulin superfamily. The encoded protein is a type I receptor glycoprotein involved in lipid, fatty acid, and sterol metabolism. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
