Target Information
The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a major cause of acute and chronic liver disease and is the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis. It affects approximately 350 million people worldwide. Immunization against HBV is a key component of preventative medicine and is offered to all children in many countries. HBV belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family, and infection is typically more serious than hepatitis A. Persistent intracellular viral carriage can lead to hepatocellular carcinoma. There are currently around 400 million HBV carriers globally, making HBV one of the most common human pathogens.
