Target Information
In vertebrates, there are four major glucose-phosphorylating isoenzymes: hexokinase I, II, III, and IV. Hexokinase catalyzes the first step of glucose metabolism by phosphorylating glucose to glucose-6-phosphate, committing it to the glycolytic pathway. Hexokinase is an allosteric enzyme inhibited by glucose-6-phosphate. Hexokinase 2 is predominantly expressed in insulin-responsive tissues such as skeletal muscle. Its expression is insulin-regulated and is associated with enhanced glycolysis observed in rapidly growing cancer cells.
