Target Information
Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor (PEDF) is a noninhibitory serpin with neurotrophic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-tumorigenic properties. It is a 50 kDa glycoprotein produced and secreted in many tissues. PEDF induces apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells and inhibits angiogenic factors such as VEGF and FGF-2. It also provides neuroprotection by suppressing neuronal apoptosis caused by oxidative or excitotoxic stress. PEDF interacts with its receptor PEDF-R, a lipase-linked cell membrane receptor, which mediates its signaling. Due to its diverse biological roles, PEDF is studied as a potential therapeutic agent for vascular-related neurodegenerative diseases (e.g., AMD, PDR) and angiogenesis-related cancers.
