Target Information

AIRE is a transcriptional regulator protein that binds to DNA as a dimer and tetramer, but not as a monomer, and may be involved in the regulation of gene expression. It is a nuclear protein composed of 545 amino acids with an HSR domain, two PHD-type zinc fingers, and a SAND domain, and may exist in soluble high-molecular-weight complexes.
AIRE may form homodimers, homotetramers, and nuclear bodies, and interacts with transcriptional coactivators CBP and CREBBP. Three isoforms of AIRE are reported, with one predicted to be a candidate for nuclear-mediated decay (NMD).
AIRE plays a role in immune regulation and mediates E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. Defects in AIRE cause the rare autosomal-recessive autoimmune disease autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED).
