Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in the defense system against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide, which is further converted to O₂ and H₂O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
There are several classes of SOD:
- SOD1 (Cu,Zn-SOD): Intracellular enzyme found in all eukaryotes; homodimeric 32 kDa enzyme with Cu and Zn ions per subunit.
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial matrix enzyme; tetrameric 80 kDa manganese-containing form located near the mitochondrial respiratory chain.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular, heparin-binding multimer mainly expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase that delivers Cu to Cu/Zn-SOD and activates it via direct Cu insertion.
