Target Information

Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, particularly during late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It contains a forkhead associated (FHA) domain that mediates association with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and the nucleolus.
Ki-67 exhibits cell cycle-dependent localization: perinucleolar expression at G1, nuclear matrix expression at G2, and chromosomal association during M phase.
Because Ki-67 is absent in G0 cells and increases steadily from G1 through mitosis, it serves as a reliable proliferation marker. Ki-67 antibodies are used to determine the growth fraction in neoplasms, with prognostic value comparable to thymidine-labelling index.
Low Ki-67 index correlates strongly with histologically low-grade tumors. Ki-67 is also routinely employed as a neuronal marker of cell cycling and proliferation.
