Target Information
The lysozyme family of proteins plays an important role in host defense and is associated with the monocyte-macrophage system, enhancing the activity of immunoagents. The mammalian lysozyme gene family consists of at least eight distinct genes scattered throughout the genome.
C-type lysozymes catalyze the hydrolysis of β-1,4 glycosidic bonds in the peptidoglycan of bacterial cell walls.
LYZL1, a homolog of human C-type lysozyme, is an intra-acrosomal, nonbacteriolytic, lysozyme-like protein isolated from human spermatozoa.
