Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of subfamily 7 in the aldehyde dehydrogenase gene family. These enzymes play a major role in detoxification of aldehydes generated by alcohol metabolism and lipid peroxidation. This member shows homology to a protein from the green garden pea (26g pea turgor protein) and is involved in lysine catabolism occurring in the mitochondrial matrix. It is found in both cytosol and mitochondria, likely due to alternative translation initiation sites. Additional isoforms have been identified. Mutations are associated with pyridoxine-dependent epilepsy. Several related pseudogenes also exist.
