Members of the human serpin family regulate diverse serine and cysteine proteinases involved in essential biological processes such as:
- Fibrinolysis
- Coagulation
- Inflammation
- Cell mobility
- Cellular differentiation
- Apoptosis
Most serpins are secreted and reach physiological concentrations in blood and extracellular fluids.
A subset, the ov-serpins, reside intracellularly. SERPINB12, a novel member of the human ov-serpin gene family, is expressed in multiple tissues including brain, bone marrow, lymph node, heart, lung, liver, pancreas, testis, ovary, and intestines.
SERPINB12 acts as an inhibitor of trypsin-like serine proteinases and represents a new functional member of the human ov-serpin family.
