Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed enzymes that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione.
There are several isoforms differing in primary structure and localization:

• GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial form, selenium-dependent, first discovered member of the GPx family.
• GPx2 (GI-GPx): Expressed in gastrointestinal tract epithelium.
• GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma form, mainly expressed by the kidney and released into the bloodstream.
• GPx4 (PH-GPx): Present in most tissues; reduces hydroperoxides integrated in membranes and lipids.
• Other isoforms include Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific secretory GPx5 (eGPx).
