Target Information
Glutathione peroxidases (Gpxs) are ubiquitously expressed enzymes that catalyze the reduction of hydrogen peroxides and organic hydroperoxides by glutathione.
There are several isoforms differing in primary structure and localization:
- GPx1 (cGPx): Classical cytosolic/mitochondrial form, selenium-dependent, first discovered member of the GPx family.
- GPx2 (GI-GPx): Expressed in gastrointestinal tract epithelium.
- GPx3 (pGPx): Extracellular plasma form, mainly expressed by the kidney and released into the bloodstream.
- GPx4 (PH-GPx): Present in most tissues; reduces hydroperoxides integrated in membranes and lipids.
- Other isoforms include Cys-containing GPx3 and epididymis-specific secretory GPx5 (eGPx).
