Target Information
Carbonic anhydrase III (CAIII) is a member of a multigene family that encodes carbonic anhydrase isozymes. These metalloenzymes catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide and are differentially expressed in various cell types.
CA3 expression is tissue specific, found at high levels in skeletal muscle and lower levels in cardiac and smooth muscle. Some carriers of Duchenne muscular dystrophy show elevated CA3 levels. The gene spans approximately 10.3 kb with seven exons and six introns.
