Target Information
Carbonic anhydrases (CAs) are zinc metalloenzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. They participate in various physiological processes such as respiration, calcification, acid-base balance, and formation of biological fluids (aqueous humor, cerebrospinal fluid, saliva, gastric juice).
The human CA5A gene encodes the CA V protein, located in the mitochondrial matrix of liver tissues, but also detectable in other tissues. In ureagenesis, CA V may provide bicarbonate to carbamoyl phosphate synthetase.
