Glutamine synthetase는 glutamine synthetase 패밀리에 속하며, 동물에서 암모니아의 통합은 glutamate dehydrogenase와 glutamine synthetase의 작용을 통해 이루어집니다. Glutamate는 질소 흐름에서 중심적인 역할을 하며, 질소 공여자이자 수용체로 작용합니다. 또한 신경전달물질 glutamate의 대사 조절에 중요한 역할을 합니다. GS의 활성은 adenylylation에 의해 조절되며, Alzheimer’s disease로 영향을 받은 뇌의 대뇌피질에서 특히 감소합니다. 또한 포도당 결핍 조건에서도 감소합니다.
