Target Information
TNF alpha is a multifunctional proinflammatory cytokine belonging to the tumor necrosis factor (TNF) superfamily. It is mainly secreted by macrophages and binds to its receptors TNFRSF1A/TNFR1 and TNFRSF1B/TNFBR. TNF alpha regulates immune cell activity, cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, lipid metabolism, and coagulation. It exists as multimers but shows a single 17 kDa band under non-reducing SDS-PAGE conditions. Knockout studies in mice suggest neuroprotective functions and tumor necrosis induction. TNF alpha plays roles in immune responses to various infections and is implicated in autoimmune diseases, insulin resistance, and cancer.
