Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) proteins act as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain, driving a proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane to produce water. The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer composed of 13 subunits, both mitochondrial and nuclear. COX5 is the heme A-containing chain of the oxidase family, converting one molecule of oxygen and four molecules of hydrogen into two molecules of water.
Two isoforms exist: COX5a (aerobic) and COX5b (hypoxic). Under high oxygen conditions, COX5a transcription increases, while under low oxygen, COX5b transcription is up-regulated to maintain efficient respiration.
