Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in the glycolytic pathway, and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis.
NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and diffuses easily to extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are injured.
It is one of three mammalian enolases (ENO1, ENO2, ENO3), also known as enolase α, β, and γ.
- α-subunit: expressed in most tissues
- β-subunit: expressed only in muscle
- γ-subunit: expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells
Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
NSE antibodies are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells.
Release of NSE from damaged neurons into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury.
Clinically, NSE is a sensitive marker for neuronal damage in disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis.
Elevated NSE levels are also observed in certain neoplasias, including pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
For Research Use Only. Not for use in diagnostic procedures. Not for resale without express authorization.
