Target Information

Voltage-sensitive calcium channels mediate the entry of calcium into many types of excitable cells and play a key role in neurotransmitter release and excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling.
The 1,4-dihydropyridines (DHPs) are synthetic organic compounds used to identify L-type calcium channels found in muscle, neuronal, and neuroendocrine cells.
The DHP receptor, part of the L-type calcium channel complex, acts as the voltage sensor in E-C coupling.
It consists of at least four subunits:

  • Alpha-1 subunit: Contains the DHP binding site and shows high homology to voltage-gated sodium channels.
  • Alpha-2 subunit: Large glycoprotein found in skeletal, cardiac, and brain tissues.
  • Beta and Gamma subunits: Co-purify with the DHP receptor.
