Target Information

The CD3 subunit complex is crucial in transducing antigen-recognition signals into the cytoplasm of T cells and in regulating TCR complex expression. Activation through the TCR involves CD3 gamma, delta, epsilon, and zeta subunits. These are immunoglobulin superfamily members encoded by closely linked genes on chromosome 11. CD3 subunits have long cytoplasmic tails that interact with signal transduction molecules via a double tyrosine-based motif. CD3 plays roles in TCR-induced growth arrest, survival, and proliferation. It is expressed on 68–82% of normal peripheral blood lymphocytes, 65–85% of thymocytes, and Purkinje cells, but not on B or NK cells. Reduced T lymphocyte percentages may occur in autoimmune diseases. Defects in CD3 genes are associated with CD3 immunodeficiency.
