Target Information

Avidin from chicken egg whites is a glycoprotein that effectively binds biotin, a tag commonly used for labeling antibodies and other probes in immunodetection methods.
This protein consists of four identical subunits with a combined molecular mass of 67,000–68,000 daltons. Each subunit binds one molecule of biotin, involving tryptophan and lysine residues in the binding site.
The subunit sequence contains 128 amino acids, and avidin has an isoelectric point of 10–10.5. It is highly soluble in water and salt solutions and remains stable across a wide pH and temperature range.
Chemical modifications have minimal impact on avidin activity, making it valuable for protein detection and purification. Pure avidin is essential in certain immunohistochemistry (IHC) methods, and enzyme conjugates such as alkaline phosphatase (AP) or horseradish peroxidase (HRP) are useful for Western blotting or ELISA detection.
