Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles responsible for protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits contain 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins. The encoded protein, a component of the 40S subunit, belongs to the S6E family of ribosomal proteins. It serves as a major substrate for ribosomal protein kinases, with phosphorylation on multiple C-terminal serine residues induced by stimuli such as growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens. Dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest, suggesting a role in regulating cell growth and proliferation through selective mRNA translation. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene exist throughout the genome.
