Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP4 (SLC39A4) is a member of a family of divalent ion transporters. Zinc is essential for cellular growth, development, and differentiation. ZIP4 was identified as a zinc-uptake transporter in the intestine and as a candidate gene for acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE), a rare inherited defect in dietary zinc absorption.
Aberrant expression of ZIP4 has been associated with cancer progression, particularly pancreatic cancer. ZIP4 activation has also been observed in hepatocellular carcinomas, where it represses apoptosis, enhances cell cycle progression, and increases migration, suggesting that ZIP4 may play roles in multiple cancer types.
