Target Information
The zinc transporter ZIP4 (SLC39A4) is a member of the family of divalent ion transporters. Zinc is an essential ion for cellular growth, development, and differentiation. ZIP4 was first identified as a zinc uptake transporter in the intestine and as a candidate gene for acrodermatitis enteropathica (AE), a rare inherited disorder affecting dietary zinc absorption.
Aberrant ZIP4 expression has been associated with cancer progression, particularly in pancreatic cancer, and is also activated in hepatocellular carcinomas, where it represses apoptosis, enhances cell cycle progression, and increases migration. These findings suggest ZIP4 may contribute to multiple cancer types.
