Target Information
Tmem119 encodes a single-pass type I transmembrane protein that interacts with various microRNAs and transcription factors (SMAD1, SMAD5, RUNX2).
It serves as a specific surface marker for microglia, distinguishing them from infiltrating macrophages. Microglia are phagocytes confined to the brain, involved in debris clearance and neuronal dendrite pruning. They exhibit functional plasticity, balancing neuroprotective and neurotoxic roles.
Reactive microglia co-express Iba1 and have been linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s disease, and Multiple Sclerosis.
Outside the neural system, Tmem119 is also implicated in osteoblast differentiation and ossification.
